PowerCLAY Operating System Requirements

  • PC with Windows OS
  • SGI with IRIX OS
  • HP with UX OS

Hardware requirements for PowerCLAY:

CPU:

On a PC Any windows CPU of Pentium 4 quality or higher:

  • A Pentium 4 with 3.5 GHz clock speed is quite good and more than required. Any clock speed over 2.0 GHz is fine.
  • There are several new CPU variations including Pentium M and Core Duo that perform as well or better than the Pentium at lower clock speeds. Please consult your IT personnel for appropriate comparisons.

On UNIX any typical workstation CPU will perform adequately.

Graphics Card:

All PC’s generally come with independent graphics cards. This is a separate piece of hardware from the actual CPU. Software graphics run on the CPU are not adequate for PowerCLAY (and not adequate for just about any application today).

  • For example a high end Nvidia G-Force graphics card is suitable.
  • There are many options for graphics cards and a better card will help the software performance. For example, you will be able to rotate larger models without screen refresh delays.
  • It is hard to find a PC today without hardware accelerated graphics

On UNIX the same logic applies, the better the graphics card the better the performance.

Memory:

Memory requirements are at least 1GB of RAM

  • This is the expensive part of the computer, for production work we recommend no less than 1GB.
  • 2GB memory of memory will handle any production task. For example, 3 million triangles in memory simultaneously. At this point the graphics card will be the limiting factor.

For Training the memory requirements are at least 256M

  • At this level a machine can read in a model of approximately 400,000 elements (triangles) and create a few large features. This is enough for the training models and methods.
