Streamlining vehicle development programmes is key to reducing cost, decreasing project length and, some argue, improving quality. To achieve those goals simulation tools are important, and Jaguar Land Rover aims to validate 100% of its systems by 2020, with the eventual target of doing everything in the virtual world, removing the need for physical prototypes.That will require a big leap, and some might laugh at the idea of not physically testing vehicles, but the firm is on the road to meeting its target, as Mark Stanton, director of vehicle engineering explains.

Jaguar Land Rover furthers virtual engineering goals

Jaguar Land Rover has announced its goal of reaching full vehicle verification exclusively through digital simulation by 2020. 
 
To achieve this, JLR is working with computer-aided engineering (CAE) company Exa Corporation for its computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software – which simulates and analyses fluid flow and heat transfer – providing JLR with a technology platform for ‘simulation driven design.'

In order for the Model 3 to hit its promised base price of $35,000, the battery pack will need to be smaller. This makes achieving the hopeful 215 mile range a challenge. Tesla CEO, Elon Musk said the drag target is set to be extremely low, at 0.21 Cd. This is lower than the Model S that boasts 0.24.

Sportscar 365 - Onroak Confirms 2017 LMP2 Car Name, Begins Wind Tunnel Testing

Onroak Automotive has confirmed the name of its 2017-spec LMP2 car as the Ligier JS P217, with wind tunnel testing already underway for the new-generation prototype that will debut in next year’s Rolex 24 at Daytona.

The French constructor, under the direction of Nicolas Clémençon, has started wind tunnel testing with a 40 percent scale model of the car.

It comes following the initial design and development phase, in collaboration with EXA, the same company Onroak worked with on the design of the Ligier JS P3.

The new model has been named the Ligier JS P217, which continues the legacy of the late influential car builder Guy Ligier and his former racing team-mate Jo Schlesser.

The first stages of development focusing on CFD computer design have been completed, creating the first visual representation of the new coupe.
